Choe Yong-Sul

Choe Yong-Sul 최 영술 (Choi Yong Sul) is the founder of Hapkido.

The latter was born in 1904 in Yeongdong in South Korea today, where he died in 1986.

At the age of 8 years he migrated to Japan, where he spent 30 years working for Master Sokaku Takeda, then head of Daito-ryu Aiki Jujitsu, a famous school of Samurai.


In 1946, Master Choe is back in Korea. He began to teach his art to as Yawara (Yusul in Korean).

This will turn the names
  • Yusul,
  • Yugweonsul (Kwon Yu Sul),
  • Hapki-Yugweonsul - 합기 유권술 (Hapki Kwon Yu Sul)
  • before taking its final name in 1958: Hapgido - 합기도 (HAPKIDO), which can be translated as "Way (C - 도) energy - (Ki - 기) UC (Hap - 합).
Between Yusul home of Mr. Choe Hapkido and modern, the latter has benefited from a major Korean traditional schools, which Taekkyon.
